Collection of maritime papers and photographs : of Albert M. Barnes II, 1820-1968.

The collection contains manuscripts, photographs, data books, logbooks, and a scrapbook. The manuscripts relate to fishing vessels from Maine and eastern Canada, and American whaling vessels. These include inspection papers, account information, crew lists, ship inventories, and other documents. Over 5,000 black-and-white photographs, 1820-1968, contain images of U.S. and Canadian fishing schooners, whaling vessels, Canadian coastal schooners, Canadian square riggers, motor trawlers, sardine fisheries, and sardine carriers. Also, includes more than 180 data books containing general specifications and career histories for thousands of American and Canadian fishing vessels. There are photocopied construction specifications, 1911, for the B.H.B. Hubbard fishing vessel. A scrapbook of clippings from 1867- 1952 Portland, Maine, and Providence, R.I., newspapers records ship arrivals, departures, and reports of accidents. Also, includes the ships' papers for the bark Joseph Grinnell, 1858-1862, and logbooks for Balaena (steamship), 1883-1884; Catalpa (whaling vessel), 1867-1868; Courser (bark), 1860-1864; Francis Allyn (schooner), 1890-1891; Hannah (fishing schooner), 1855 and 1865; J.D. Thompson (bark), 1858-1859; Julia Ann (fishing boat), 1856; Monterey (fishing schooner), 1852, 1853, and 1854; Quickstep (schooner), 1871-1874; Sea Witch (fishing boat), 1865; Victoria (brig), 1871; and Wanderer (bark), 1906 and 1908.

Barnes was a maritime historian who became a research assistant at the Mariners Museum in 1952.
